Leading engineering specialist, SES Engineering Services has announced a further prestigious contract win for its York office, working alongside main contractor, Galliford Try, on an ambitious £45m sports hub for the region.

SES has been appointed to design and install a full range of building services on Leeds Beckett University’s new build state-of-the-art Carnegie Teaching and Research Building, which will house its world-leading Carnegie School of Sport, at its Headingley campus.

As one of the largest providers of sport in UK higher education, The Carnegie School of Sport will allow the university to unite its specialised teaching and research laboratories as well as deliver a hub for elite athletes and sports and industry partners.

The building, which is the first to be constructed on the site for over 40-years, will also include a hypoxic laboratory, a health and wellbeing studio, an indoor 60m sprint track for performance training and analysis, a roof walker track and terrace, and an enhanced strength and conditioning space as well as changing and recovery facilities.

SES has, in part, secured this latest contract win thanks to its ability to work in tandem with main contractors during the bidding stages and work to BIM Level 2. On this occasion, SES clearly set out its strategy for project delivery as well as developing designs for the full range of building services it will install once on site.

Speaking about this latest higher education sector win, Steve Joyce, Business Director North and Scotland, SES said:

“Having recently had the privilege of working with Galliford Try on a number of complex higher education facilities, such as the award-winning refurbishment of the University of Leeds’ world-class School of Chemical and Process Engineering, we have amassed a great deal of knowledge and experience of the sector.

“To be involved with such an innovative building as the Carnegie Teaching and Research Building further cements our excellent working relationship with the contractor. It also presents a further opportunity for SES to demonstrate its BIM Level 2 experience to great effect.”

Adding his comments, Sean Sweet, Project Director, Galliford Try said:

“We have a successful track record of delivering innovative buildings in the higher education sector. This would not be achievable were it not for our ability to bring together such a formidable and highly experienced team of project partners, who work with us to execute logistically challenging schemes.

“We are delighted to be able to support the university to deliver its vision for creating world-class facilities for its undergraduates, post graduate and research programmes and the elite athletes who tap into its performance expertise.”
