Appointed by Willmott Dixon in 2015, SES Engineering Services (SES) became a part of the integrated project team to replace three outdated and inefficient suites, bringing together custody suites of two towns – Rotherham and Sheffield to deliver a new £12m custodial suite for up to 50 offenders and incorporate four cell wings and a two-storey office block. The project team not only achieved this on time and on budget but also delivered a shared ambitious vision of a faultless and sustainable building combined with tangible community investment.
With M&E playing such a critical role in the Sheffield build, it was essential that the supply chain were engaged with as soon as possible to ensure materials and services were delivered to precision.
BIM was an intrinsic part of the Integrated Project Delivery approach for this project. The default position was to provide a fully co-ordinated model for all high level services, risers and plantrooms produced by our offsite manufacturing facility, Prism. This allowed the project team to validate the design early and to reduce operations and maximise efficiency. The team worked closely with the entire supply chain to provide a true digital manufacturing functionality from BIM, reducing cost and waste as well as improving efficiency on the project.
An intelligent, inventive and practical space, the custody suite is the first such building in the country to generate up to 50kW through its own PV capabilities and will be a UK police force flagship project.
“One of the stand-out aspects of this collaboration was the level of accountability and inherent honesty. There were no project managers hiding behind e-mails and it was a hugely refreshing experience to work with contractors who preferred to communicate verbally and openly.
“This easy information flow and quick warning system has been a game changing experience for the force, by breaking down barriers of communication, we had a true sense of trust.”
“The exemplary performance of Rob Holmes and his team of engineers during the demanding delivery of Sheffield Custody Suite proved priceless. Their commitment, focus and teamwork throughout the project were outstanding, becoming instrumental to Willmott Dixon in delighting our mutual client.”
