Margam Green Energy Plant is a UK-critical 40MW wood-fired biomass power station, near Port Talbot, South Wales. SES Engineering Services (SES) was appointed to design, install and commission the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services which was constructed by a consortium between Interserve Construction and the Danish process supplier Babcock & Wilcox Vølund (BWV). This scheme represents a major boost for the Welsh economy as well as the UK’s commitment to meeting its renewable energy targets. Margam Green Energy Plant is owned by Glennmont Partners, a specialist clean energy investment fund.
Construction of the £160m plant started in February 2015 and is capable of processing 250,000 tonnes of waste wood per annum, including contaminated wood, with no pre-treatment. It will also be able to process solid municipal waste converting this into a fuel source in the future.
A key factor in the successful delivery of the project was the design of the MEP services directly into a centrally held £d model thereby co-ordinating not only with the structural elements of the building itself, but with the process services package provided by BWV. This ensured a seamless integration of both the MEP and process services into the facility.
SES Engineering Services was also successful in securing Teesside Energy Centre which is the sister project to Margam Green Energy.
