Project at a glance

Trinity Road has stood in Halifax since 1974, a Grade II listed office building that generations of local people have worked in and walked past.

Failing glazing, ageing systems and years of wear meant it was struggling to perform. Demolition was never on the table though, the building’s heritage called for a retrofit-first approach instead.

Working alongside our client, Wates Smartspace and Lloyds Banking Group, we led the delivery of a complex MEP package within the £110m+ refurbishment, working together as one team to create a vibrant commercial space that the 3,500 employees working from it each day could be proud of, alongside the wider Halifax community.

Underneath the façade sits a serious piece of engineering: four 675kW ground-source heat pumps now do the heating work that used to depend on gas, which previously accounted for 9 per cent of Lloyds Banking Group’s total gas consumption. That dependency is gone, cutting 2,200 tonnes of CO2 a year, equivalent to taking over 1,600 cars off the road.

The entire curtain wall was retained through the building’s original 1974 specialist supplier, keeping its geometric fidelity, acoustic and airtightness standards, with 100 per cent recycled aluminium and recycled glass.
