BIOS, Teesside University
Engineering next-generation learning environments
SES supported the delivery of Teesside University’s BIOS Central Laboratories – a state‑of‑the‑art science, health and medical facility designed to transform education and training for future healthcare professionals.
Located at the heart of the university’s campus, the four-storey building brings together advanced laboratories, clinical teaching spaces and immersive digital environments in a single, highly integrated facility.
The building delivers:
- Four floors of advanced laboratory and clinical teaching space
- Immersive simulation suites and digital learning environments
- High-performance, energy-efficient infrastructure aligned with ambitious sustainability targets
Designed to support a wide range of disciplines – including anatomy, microbiology, chemistry and food science – the facility equips students with the skills and experience needed to succeed in modern healthcare and life sciences careers.
Our approach
Delivering a highly serviced laboratory environment required precise coordination of complex MEP systems to support a wide range of specialist teaching and research functions.
The facility needed to accommodate diverse technical requirements – from microbiology and chemistry labs to clinical simulation suites – while maintaining strict environmental control, air quality and operational resilience.
In addition, the project was delivered within a constrained live campus environment, requiring careful planning, stakeholder coordination and uninterrupted access to surrounding buildings.
SES applied a systems-led engineering approach to integrate complex building services across the facility, ensuring consistent performance across all teaching and laboratory environments.
Working collaboratively with Wates and the wider project team, we delivered:
- High-performance MEP systems tailored to specialist laboratory and clinical spaces
- Advanced ventilation and air handling solutions to meet stringent laboratory requirements
- Digitally coordinated building services to manage complexity and optimise installation
Offsite manufacturing and pre‑engineered solutions played a key role in improving quality, consistency and programme efficiency, contributing to a pre‑manufactured value exceeding 55% across the project.
