Engineering the future of data innovation
SES Engineering Services was appointed by McLaughlin & Harvey to deliver full MEP services and raised access flooring for the University of Edinburgh’s Data Technology Institute—a seven-storey, state-of-the-art facility at the heart of the university’s campus.
This pioneering development supports world-leading research in data technologies, data-intensive science, and analytics, and is home to university researchers, industrial collaborators, start-ups, and spin-out enterprises. The building plays a central role in the university’s ambition to lead data innovation across Scotland and internationally.
To minimise disruption to the busy campus, SES deployed advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM) and adopted a ‘just-in-time’ delivery strategy. Offsite manufacturing via SES’ Prism facility enabled the production of ready-made service modules, improving safety, reducing site congestion, and accelerating programme delivery.
Technical highlights:
Smart campus integration
- Full MEP services and raised access flooring
- Seamless integration with existing infrastructure
- Delivered with minimal disruption to campus operations
Digital engineering & BIM
- BIM Level 2 coordination
- Optimised service layouts and installation sequencing
- Enabled offsite manufacturing and just-in-time logistics
Offsite manufacturing excellence
- Prefabricated service modules produced at Prism
- Improved safety and reduced site labour
- Enhanced programme certainty and delivery efficiency
As the UK’s very first M&E contractor to achieve the BRE BIM Level 2 Certification – the standard required by Government to work on Whitehall-procured projects – we’re proud to be at the forefront of how data is changing the engineering industry. Helping to deliver a world-leading Data Technology Institute was a very exciting and fitting project for us.”
