Project at a glance

Located at the heart of Norwich Research Park, the Quadram Institute is a purpose-built facility that brings together research teams from the Institute of Food Research, the University of East Anglia, and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. SES Engineering Services was appointed at the design phase to deliver full MEP services—ensuring early collaboration, reduced clashes, and a streamlined project sequence.

With BIM and offsite manufacturing at the core of the delivery strategy, SES exceeded its initial offsite targets by developing risers, plantrooms, and service modules through its dedicated facility, Prism. This collaborative approach and “one team” ethos resulted in significant programme savings and enhanced project outcomes.

The building’s scale and confined site presented logistical challenges that made offsite the only viable solution. SES removed over 8,000 man hours from site and saved approximately 1,000 days—delivering major benefits to the client.

“It has been a hugely refreshing experience to work with design, construction and engineering contractors who share such a clear and transparent attitude to collaboration.

The engineering complexity of combining research and healthcare provision under one roof created many unique challenges for both the client and contractor. Right at the architectural design stage, a commitment to quality and detailed design achieved through offsite manufacturing was of a level we’ve not seen before and we’ve been hugely impressed.”
