Project at a glance

SES Engineering Services joined forces with Geoffrey Robinson Ltd to deliver critical MEP infrastructure for the NHS Nightingale Hospital North East in Sunderland—a 460-bed emergency facility created to support the region’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Working under immense time pressure, SES helped convert a 9,000m² empty unit into a fully operational hospital in just weeks. The project team, including SES, Medi-Plumb, Hadrian Air Conditioning, Phillips Commissioning, Aggreko, Integrated Utility Services, ACS, Bender UPS, and Solo Blinds, operated double shifts with up to 190 people on site at any one time. Stringent safety protocols were maintained throughout.

SES installed 48km of cabling, 12,000m of copper pipework, 2,500m of ventilation ductwork, and 920 oxygen outlets—essential for treating patients with respiratory symptoms.

A multi-disciplinary team worked around the clock, meeting the urgent needs of the NHS with precision and speed.

SES engaged Prism, its offsite manufacturing facility, to accelerate delivery and reduce on-site labour.

This new NHS Nightingale Hospital will provide extra, specialist capacity to care for coronavirus patients from across the North East and North Cumbria, should the NHS need it.
Completing this facility in a matter of weeks is a huge testimony to the power of pulling together to achieve a joint goal and all partners involved – from the NHS, construction contractors and partner organisations – have worked tirelessly to achieve this.  My gratitude and thanks go to everyone involved.

Health and care staff, and people in local communities across the region, can be reassured there will be additional beds for specialist care if it is needed.”
