Pimlico's community heating scheme was established over 50 years ago using waste energy from Battersea Power Station. A boiler house was built to ensure continuity of supply after the closure of the power station in 1980.
The boiler house is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment, and SES has been selected to undertake the required building services work. This includes the installation of three new 30-tonne boilers and two CHP engines to the existing pumphouse on the north side of the river Thames. Each 17-tonne CHP engine is capable of producing 2 megawatts of electricity, while each boiler can produce 8 megawatts of energy. This, in turn, feeds 3000 dwellings and 40 commercial premises with heating and hot water.
The project is due for completion in October 2006.
