2010 Safety Priorities

For 2010 and beyond, our Safety Priorities are as detailed:

Early Involvement. To ensure that all safety, health and environmental issues are discussed, at the earliest stage, any perceived risk reviewed and documentation matters addressed, the Divisional SHE Advisor or Head of Safety, Health and Environment must be invited to all Project Pre Commencement Meetings.

Asbestos. The SHE Department must be informed at the earliest stage possible of any work to be carried out on refurbishment type projects. No work including survey type operations must be carried out until SES has been issued with a type 3 survey and where necessary asbestos clearance/clean air certification.

Electrical Procedures. Electrical works pose a serious risk to SES, sub-contract and other workers. All electrical works must be properly managed and comply with the SES Low Voltage Safety Procedures. Project management must ensure that suitably trained employees are available to carry out all aspects of electrical installation, energisation and management.

Safety Training. All employees, regardless of job task or position must be adequately trained to carry out their work tasks in a safe manner. This includes trade certification, equipment training, safety awareness and principal contractor management and supervision training requirements such as SSSTS and SMSTS courses.

SES SHE Management Systems. SES is one of a very small number of companies that hold OHSAS 18001 (safety) and ISO 14001 (environmental) accreditations. To both maintain accreditation and ensure that all tasks are suitably controlled, project management must ensure that all documentation and site activities are carried out and managed as stipulated in the SES Health and Safety Policy.

Sub, Sub contracting. SES has a legal duty to assess the competence of all companies who work on its behalf. The SES/169 Sub contract Compny SHE Assessment form is used, to satisfy this requirement. A completed copy of this form is required from ALL companies who work on the Companies behalf. The sub sub contracting of any works is not allowed under SES Procedures without written permission following appropriate safety and financial checks.

United Kingdom Construction Group (UKCG) Requirements. The UKCG includes all the companies for whom we work, it is therefore essential that we are aware of each individual companies requirements and react promptly and professionally to all requests. With regard to SHE issues the SHE Department must be contacted immediately if there is any doubt regarding UKCG member company policy issue.

Behavioural Safety/Change. The vast majority of accidents are caused by inappropriate actions, attitudes or behaviours. In many cases these accidents are avoidable and taking time to consider the task in hand, access methods, PPE etc would prevent them. The SES SHE Department will continue to promote Behavioural Safety, with an emphasis on management training (including safety leadership issues) and onsite training. the aim of this training is to create a working environment where safety and quality are the number one consideration of all concerned.
